Both Stomal Therapy Services and NSW Ostomy Support Groups help people who have a temporary or permanent artificial body opening, whether created surgically or otherwise. The stoma assists the removal of urine and products of the gastrointestinal tract where the person does not have normal gastrointestinal tract or bladder functions.
Having a diagnosis that you require a stoma operation can be a stressful time for the individual and their close family. Pyschological distress can be reduced through peer support which has a positive effect on emotional wellbeing and quality of life. Knowing you are not alone and being able to share feelings and experiences with others is beneficial to your wellbeing.
